Devotional thoughts for the Sunday before Christmas - 18th Dec 2011

Reading: From the Gospel according to St. Luke. 3: 23- 38
Dear and Respected Brethren,
In today’s reading we find the genealogy of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the beginning of the Gospel according to St. Matthew we find another genealogy. If the genealogy in St. Matthew’s presentation starts from Abraham and ends in Lord Jesus, the genealogy as seen in today’s reading starts from Lord Jesus and ends in Abraham.  St. Matthew starts his description like this: “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” St. Luke starts the genealogy of Lord Jesus Christ like this: “And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph which was the son of Heli “and carries on   till Abraham. As we all know and believe undoubtedly that Lord Jesus is the son of God and was born without a worldly father as and when the word of God took flesh in the womb of ever virgin St. Mary. In the light of the above fact we all might doubt the need of the presence of the genealogy in two of the gospels and that too in two different forms but at the same time without having a single change in the order of description.
The reasons for the appearance of the genealogies are very clear. Though Lord Jesus incarnated from the Holy Spirit and St. Mary as the son of God, without a worldly father, as against the human conception and knowledge, He remained in the world as full God and full man. The purpose of incarnation of our Lord Jesus was the salvation and redemption of the entire mankind from the time of Adam till the end. Lord Jesus succeeded in His great mission of the salvation of mankind and re-in station of Adam and his sons in God and God’s eternal life. Here comes the significance of our Lord’s self-introduction as son of man. In St. Matthew 8:20, 10:21, 11:19, 12; 8; 32; 40, 13: 37;41, 16:13, 17: 9; 22, 24: 27; 30; 44, 25: 31,26:2; 24; 43, St. Mark 8: 38, 9:12;31, St. Luke 5: 24, 6:22, 9:22; 56, 11:30, 12:8, 17:22, 18:8, 19:10, 21:36, 22: 48, St. John 1:51, 3:13, 5:27, 6:27; 53; 62, 8:28, 12:23;34 and 13:31 we find the self- introduction of our Lord as son of man. In Acts 7: 56 and Revelation 1: 13 also we could find the same usage of Son of man
Here comes the importance and relevance of the definition of the incarnation of our Lord by the Cappadocian Fathers that Son of God became son of man to convert sons of men as Sons of God.” Our Lord incarnated and identified Himself with man in all human natures except the tendency to be a victim or slave of sin and Satan. Our Lord identified to the forefathers in the fullest sense while linking Himself with the generations of the mankind. Moreover we should realize that it was the will of God.
In the genealogy we could find people of various natures, cultures and life styles. Though men could classify others in various groups, God considers one and all as His own children and of course alike, without any sort of difference. The genealogy proclaims the truth that the entire mankind is same to God without any sort of difference of color, caste, gender or any other consideration. He has incarnated for the salvation of all. He has made sure that the eternal life is promised to one and all who might believe in His gospel after real repentance.  Our Lord’s only intention is to extend His love to one all.   This presentation of the genealogy proclaims that God never keeps any sort of classifications among His children. All the people are dear to Him and He wants one all near to Him.
We all had been observing the advent Lent since a few days to witness and enjoy the great thrill of the incarnation of our Lord, Savior and Redeemer. We all are supposed to renew the incarnation of our Lord in our hearts instead of spending a lot of hard earned money for the celebrations for nothing. Let us earnestly desire and long for the incarnation of our Savior in our hearts. May God Almighty enable us all to enjoy the spiritual thrill and blessing of the real Christmas. Wish everyone a happy and blessed Christmas.
May God bless us all
